Does time always seem to slip away?
If you’re a teen juggling school, activities, friends, and downtime, it can feel overwhelming fast. Especially if you have ADHD. When things pile up, that overwhelm can turn into avoidance, which sometimes looks to others like you don’t care or aren’t trying.
But here’s the truth: it’s not laziness. It’s a problem with your executive functioning.
Think of executive functioning as your brain’s management system. It helps you plan, focus, remember things, manage time, and get started on tasks.
Executive functioning skills develop at different speeds. For teens with ADHD, this system often develops more slowly. (And yes, people without ADHD struggle with this too.)
Time blindness is a term coined by Dr. Russell Barkley, a psychologist and ADHD-focused researcher. It’s not meant to be a negative or demeaning term. Time blindness refers to an experience, common among people with ADHD, of not having a clear sense of time.
“Just as people who are near-sighted can only read things close at hand, people with ADHD can only deal with things near in time. The further out the event lies, the less they are capable of dealing with it, and this is why everything is left to the last minute because they only deal with last minutes.”— Dr. Russell Barkley
